White Exterior with an Ivory Interior

One of Only 19 Roadsters Worldwide

The Sián belongs to Lamborghini’s exclusive “Few-Off” category, alongside models such as the Reventón, Veneno and Centenario. These vehicles are produced in extremely restricted numbers and are used to introduce new technology, materials and design concepts before they influence later Lamborghini models.

Official Lamborghini production information confirms that only 63 Sián Coupés and 19 Sián Roadsters were built. This makes the Roadster substantially rarer than the Coupé and one of the lowest-production road-legal Lamborghinis of the modern era.

Its name also carries a different meaning from the fighting-bull names traditionally used by the company. “Sián” translates from the local Bolognese dialect as “flash” or “lightning”, referencing the instantaneous electrical assistance provided by its innovative hybrid system.

Naturally Aspirated 6.5-Litre V12

At the centre of the Sián Roadster is Lamborghini’s 6,498 cc naturally aspirated V12. Equipped with titanium intake valves and calibrated to produce 785 CV at 8,500 rpm, it was the most powerful road-going Lamborghini combustion engine at the time of the model’s introduction.

Rather than replacing the character of the V12, the hybrid system was engineered to amplify it. A compact 48-volt electric motor is incorporated into the transmission, contributing an additional 34 CV. Together, the combustion engine and electric motor produce a combined 819 CV.

This allows the Sián Roadster to retain the immediate throttle response, rising engine note and high-revving character of a naturally aspirated Lamborghini while using electrical assistance to improve acceleration and smooth the delivery of torque during gear changes.

Lamborghini quotes a maximum speed of more than 350 km/h. Manufacturer performance figures apply to the model and have not been independently measured for this individual car.

Supercapacitor Hybrid Technology

Unlike a conventional hybrid vehicle, the Sián does not rely on a large lithium-ion traction battery. Instead, Lamborghini developed a lightweight supercapacitor mounted in the bulkhead between the passenger compartment and the V12 engine.

According to Lamborghini’s official Sián Roadster technical information, the supercapacitor can deliver three times the power of a lithium-ion battery of the same weight while being three times lighter than a battery producing an equivalent output.

The complete electrical system, including the supercapacitor and 34 CV motor, weighs just 34 kilograms. This gives the system a power-to-weight ratio of one kilogram per CV.

Energy is recovered under braking and stored in the supercapacitor, which can be charged and discharged at the same rate. The stored energy is then immediately available during acceleration, rather than being retained to provide a meaningful electric-only driving range. This is a performance-led hybrid system designed to support the V12 rather than replace it.

Electrical assistance remains available at speeds of up to approximately 130 km/h, helping to improve throttle response and fill the interruption in torque that would otherwise occur during transmission shifts. The electric motor can also assist during low-speed manoeuvring.

Seven-Speed ISR Transmission and Four-Wheel Drive

The Sián Roadster uses Lamborghini’s seven-speed Independent Shifting Rod automated manual transmission. The electric motor is integrated directly into the gearbox, allowing its torque to reach the wheels without an indirect belt-driven system.

Permanent four-wheel drive works with a rear mechanical self-locking differential to distribute the combined V12 and electric output. Torque distribution can be adjusted according to the selected driving mode and available grip, providing greater stability while preserving the rear-led character expected from a flagship Lamborghini.

The supercapacitor system is particularly valuable during gear changes. Electrical assistance helps maintain forward momentum while the mechanical transmission completes each shift, resulting in a more continuous surge of acceleration.

Four-Wheel Steering and Active Suspension

Lamborghini Dynamic Steering operates alongside a dedicated rear-wheel-steering system. At lower speeds, the rear wheels can turn in the opposite direction to the fronts, effectively shortening the wheelbase and improving manoeuvrability. At higher speeds, they can turn in the same direction to increase stability.

The Sián Roadster also uses magnetorheological front and rear dampers with a pushrod suspension arrangement. Damper behaviour is continuously adapted according to road conditions and the chosen driving mode, helping the chassis control roll and unwanted body movement.

Specially developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres work alongside the all-wheel-drive, steering and suspension systems to manage the Sián’s substantial performance.

Roofless Design without Aerodynamic Compromise

The Sián Roadster was designed as a completely open car rather than a Coupé with a conventional folding roof mechanism. Its uninterrupted cockpit creates a direct connection between the occupants, the surrounding environment and the naturally aspirated V12.

Lamborghini engineered the body to retain aerodynamic efficiency despite the absence of a roof. Air is directed through the front splitter and bonnet, around the side intakes and outlets and towards the integrated rear spoiler.

The resulting design combines a low front section, Y-shaped headlights, long aerodynamic channels and large rear buttresses. Viewed from above, its profile incorporates the “periscopio” line first associated with the original Countach.

Countach-Inspired Design Details

The Sián’s design looks towards Lamborghini’s electrified future while retaining deliberate references to the company’s past. The Y-shaped front lights were influenced by the Terzo Millennio concept, while the rear uses six hexagonal taillights arranged in two groups of three.

Its active rear wing remains integrated into the body when not required and rises automatically during driving. This maintains the purity of the rear profile while providing additional aerodynamic support at speed.

The Sián also uses patented thermally reactive cooling vanes near the exhaust system. Instead of relying on electric actuators or additional sensors, these vanes respond directly to heat. As exhaust temperatures rise, the smart-material elements change position and open the cooling channels.

This elegant solution reduces mechanical complexity and demonstrates the materials-science experimentation for which Lamborghini created the Sián programme.

A Landmark Collector Lamborghini

The Sián Roadster represents the point at which Lamborghini began combining electrical assistance with its naturally aspirated V12. It preceded the later Countach LPI 800-4 and helped establish the technological direction that eventually led to the Revuelto.

However, the Sián remains very different from Lamborghini’s later plug-in hybrid models. Its compact supercapacitor system, seven-speed automated transmission and Aventador-generation V12 give it a distinct mechanical identity.
